Introduction
sections[0].body
On July 13th, President Trump informed Congress that the United States military would strike the Islamic Republic of Iran (1). The same day, Tehran suspended its commitment to its bilateral ceasefire with Washington (2). These alerts signal that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Islamabad on June 18th, 2026, has effectively collapsed. This blog post examines the military, diplomatic, and political dynamics of renewed conflict in the Middle East.

Military Exchanges

The end of the Islamabad MoU comes as both the United States and Iran launch aerial strikes against each other’s regional assets and allies. The Iranians have, thus far, targeted US bases and military or industrial facilities in the UAE, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, and Qatar (a). The Islamic Republic has also targeted civilian merchant vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz without Iranian approval (3). A strike on an Indian vessel drew formal diplomatic condemnation (4).
United States Central Command has struck hundreds of military and economic sites along Iran’s southern coastline over three nights. One attack featured the first utilization of a one-way attack sea drone against an IRGC naval base in Bandar Abbas (5) Washington has also re-imposed a naval blockade against Iran, though President Trump has since walked back a plan to charge a 20% toll on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz (6). Following the announcement of the blockade, crude oil prices rose to a month-long high of $81 per barrel (7).

Diplomatic Dynamics
sections[0].body
Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, the UAE, and Jordan have issued formal condemnations of Tehran’s airstrikes on their territory since the conflict restarted (b). These nations have historically been US allies and utilized US munitions to intercept Iranian projectiles and drones. Based on their reactions to the airstrikes, their partnership with Washington will likely deepen in the short term.
Iran is not, however, fully diplomatically isolated. In the wake of renewed conflict, Iranian officials have spoken with Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivlev (8), Chinese Ambassador Cong Peiwu (9), and Pakistani diplomatic officials (10). These meetings primarily focused on economic relief, oil and natural gas, and de-escalation.

Despite these talks, the ongoing blockade and strikes are expected to degrade Iran’s consumer economy. In March 2026, urban centers such as Tehran made public transport free of charge in order to reduce fuel consumption and address economic concerns imposed by the US blockade (11). By May 2026, Iranian state news reported that food prices had increased by upwards of 400% (12). A renewed US blockade will almost certainly exacerbate the ongoing economic decline as imports become increasingly inaccessible. Though hardliners have utilized economic concerns to critique President Pezeshkian (13), Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei continues to stress national unity and a narrative of “revenge” for the killing of his father in public messaging. He has not, however, made a public appearance since the beginning of the conflict (14).

Nuclear Risk

Finally, there are conflicting reports concerning whether Tehran is strengthening its nuclear program. In an interview on July 13th, President Trump noted that “We see no activity [at Pickaxe Mountain]… But we’ll probably give Pickaxe a shot relatively soon.” Esfahan Province’s Pickaxe Mountain, one of Iran’s main nuclear Research and Development Sites, was previously targeted in 2025 (15). Contrary to the President’s claim, Israeli satellite analysis reveals that Tehran has likely attempted to reinforce structures within the Pickaxe Mountain facility (16).
